The biggest thing in the news these days is Swine Flu, odviously. All anyone ever talks about is swine flu, I spent an entire chemistry class listening to people talk about it (teacher included). Through every thing the biggest question on my mind has been; Just how bad is it? I know that it has been declared level 5 meaning a pandemic is immenant, but apart from in mexico no one else has died from it. If you think about it thats not really suprising. Mexico for the most part is a very underdeveloped country. Not many people have access to medical care and many people are sick to begin with whether from poor nutrition or poor living conditions. It was also the original point of infection so people would have died before it was recognised for what it was. How much has the media exaggerated the seriousness of this situation? Don't get me wrong, Iknow that in the beggining there was honestly the possibillity of swine flu being 'the next Spanish Influenza'. The worst part is if every thing they've been saying on the news is true why didn't governments do more to prevent the spread? Out of this little fiasco I have come to 3 possible conclusions. a)the many governmants of the world are composed of complete idiots b) No one cares about RESPONSIBLE media coverage of anything these days (especially the media)and c) All of the above plus the fact that you can no longer trust any of the important information sources of the world ie. government&media to give you a straight story that hasn't been to thier own ends ie. getting the best scoop & making themselves look good. I do not consider myself an expert on the subject but, with such contradictory actions being taken by government & media, how could anyone be?

In more mundane news the school year is quickly coming to a close and that means it is I.S. season. for anyone that doesn't know an I.S. (a.k.a. Independant Study) is a summative project done by high school students that is worth 10 to 30% of thier final mark. I know what your thinking : Who comes up with this stuff? One thing's for sure it was not a teenager. I guess someone, somewhere, who is too old to remember what high school is like decided that exams weren't THAT stressful. Or that senior students didn't need extra time to apply to colleges and universities, or for scholarships, bursaries and student loans. So buddy, where ever you are, if you are reading this you should know that if anyone ever asks "Who invented I.S.'s anyway?" DO NOT under ANY circomstances tell them it was you because believe me, you will regret it. :)
